If you’re the kind of business traveler who seems to wind up spending a stack of time in airports, you’ll be keen to hear about the new Yotel chain. They’re a spin-off from the British Yo! Sushi stores, and although the leap from Japanese food to airport accommodation seems kind of big, the Yotel concept does sound like something that will work.

Yotel is a kind of capsule hotel, located inside airport terminals, and rentable by the hour (minimum stay is 4 hours) or overnight, and while the rooms are small, they look especially funky and are well-equipped with internet access and the ability to order food from the TV screen. You can choose from Premium and Standard cabins, and the promoters act like the Premium capsule will give you 4-star hotel standards, just in a pretty confined space. In a Standard, you pretty much squeeze yourself in with your luggage under the furniture, but the Premium has a clever feature where the bed converts to a couch, with working desk space, at the push of a button.

Although Yotels are in planning for all kinds of high traffic airports like London Heathrow, Singapore, Hong Kong and Amsterdam, there’s only one open at the moment. The London Gatwick Yotel took a few months longer than planned to open but finally started taking bookings early this month - so it’s a bit early for me to decide if it’s working or not. For reasonable prices - starting at 25 GBP for a four-hour rest in a Standard cabin - you can get a nap in between flights without leaving the airport.
